Matt Roth and Roger Mentch have announced The Santa Cruz Chapter of Americans for Safe Access (ASA) will hold it’s 2nd meeting this coming Thursday, May 27th.

The meeting will be held at Loudon Nelson Community Center, 301 Center Street, Santa Cruz, California, at 7:15pm.

Ten people showed up for the first meeting, a month ago, only a few of them ASA members.  ASA requires ten card-carrying members to form a local chapter.  The goal of the meetings is to form a local chapter.

There is no other organization in Santa Cruz where the various facets of the medical marijuana community – growers, dispensaries, patients, collectives – can meet and organize to further their common interests.

Mentch stated that Matt Roth is going to try to get Lisa Molyneux of Greenway to speak about the national campaign.  Greenway is one of two dispensaries authorized to distribute and cultivate marijuana for medical use in the city of Santa Cruz.  On 9 Mar 2010 the Santa Cruz city council voted to ban more than the two existing medical marijuana dispensaries, suspending the processing of two applications in the process.

Americans for Safe Access is the largest national member-based organization of patients, medical professionals, scientists and concerned citizens promoting safe and legal access to cannabis for therapeutic use and research. ASA has over 30,000 active members with chapters and affiliates in more than 40 states.

ASA was launched to national prominence by the raid of the Women’s Alliance for Medical Marijuana (WAMM) in Santa Cruz, in 2002.

Roger Mentch is the proprietor of The Hemporium in Felton, California.  He is the defendant in The Mentch Decision, which determined that in order to qualify as a caregiver one must provide for the housing, health, or safety of the patient before providing them marijuana and that dispensaries cannot qualify as caregivers under The Compassionate Use Act of 1996.
